In the Indian epic the Ramayana, Lakshmana also known as Soumitri Bharatanuja is the younger brother and close companion of the god Rama, the hero of the epic and avatar of the god Vishnu. According to the Ramayana, Lakshmana is one quarter component of manifest Vishnu and is considered to be an avatar of Shesha, the serpent associated with Vishnu.
Lakshmana is personified by Rama as a man with unwavering loyalty, love and commitment to his elder brother through times of joy and adversity alike but also criticized for leaving his wife Urmila alone for the sake of serving his brother.
The statue of Lakshmana stands inside a glass display in a parking area near Lakshman Jhula pedestrian bridge in Rishikesh. Lakshmana is represented as a standing figure with an arrow in his right hand and a bow in his left.
