In Castine, on the campus of the Maine Maritime Academy, is a memorial for those who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.
The monument is located near Leavitt Hall, in the middle of the campus, and off Pleasant Street. Near this spot is a flag pole.
The monument is a squarish stone monument with engraved inscription on one side and a bronze plaque on another. The inscription is as follows:
"{Two logos, one on either side]
The seas washed over them and they were gone.
6,895 Merchant Mariners 60 from the state of Maine and 1,810 members of the U.S. Naval Armed Guard lost their live in WWII
1941-1946
We shall not forget them
[image of a ship]"
The other side has a plaque with the title: "Maine Men Lost at Sea"
Three columns of names are displayed.
A newspaper article from the Bangor Daily News documented a ceremony on November 12, 2011, which is the date put done as the date of dedication.
