The building was the General Post Office between 1887 and 1981 and at one time was the most prominent building in Forster Square.

The imposing building has a frontage of 224 feet and is 3 storeys high. It housed both the public counters but also the sorting office. It was designed by Mr. Henry Tanner of the Board of works and the ornate Italianate structure reflected the importance of Bradford at that time.

However Forster Square was replaced by a modern road scheme and the building lost its prominence. In recent years it was partially obscured by a building site which for a new shopping mall. The construction of this was delayed for a number of years, but was finally completed in November 2015.

Now the mall is complete, and the hoardings removed from the site, a view of the building has now opened up from the rear entrance of the mall.

The Clock
The clock face itself is rather plain, but is housed in a finely carved stone pediment. It has a white face with black Roman Numerals around the perimeter, and small black lines marking the minutes.

The clock is flanked by stone pillars, carved as male human figures. Above the clock face is a carved lion's head and above that the coat of arms of the United Kingdom.

The coat of arms reflect the fact that at that time the Royal Mail was a Department of State which had originally been created by King Charles II in 1660.
