The larger than life 8' high bronze Mankind Figure Maiden was created by Paul Manship and cast at the Roman Bronze Works in 1934. Originally the figure, along with its companion piece Mankind Figure Youth, was gilded and installed flanking the statue of Prometheus in the Sunken Plaza of Rockefeller Center. Prometheus, in Greek mythology, is credited with creating the first man and woman from clay.
Manship was not happy with the placement and the statues were removed and stored for many yeas on the roof of the British Empire Building. In 1983, the gilding was removed and both figures were re-installed in their current location on platforms flanking the stairway between the Channel Gardens and the Sunken Plaza.
The heroic-size Mankind Figure Maiden is nude young woman. She is standing next to imaginative over-sized vegetation that is meant to evoke the foliage of the Garden of Eden. She has her right leg bent up at the knee and holds a cloth in her left hand that is draped over her lower torso, upper right thigh, and left leg.
