In Castine, at the center of town, is the Maine Maritime Academy.
The academy is integral to Castine, with a campus running from the waterfront up to the remnants of Ft. George. The campus has several brick buildings, with grassy spaces between them.

"Maine Maritime Academy is a public, co-educational college located in the coastal town of Castine, Maine. Our student population numbers approximately 950 students in courses of study in engineering, management, science, and transportation. Our rigorous courses and experiential programs equip students with the practical skills, knowledge, and training to launch successful careers upon completing an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree.
MMA students benefit from hands-on education, international sea-time aboard the Training Ship State of Maine or the Schooner Bowdoin, cadet shipping aboard commercial vessels, and cooperative education assignments. Our students become world-class mariners and engineers, supply chain managers, logistics professionals, and scientists here in Maine and beyond.
Maine Maritime Academy was ranked the #1 Best Public College on Money magazine’s Best Colleges list in 2014 and 2015. The college’s history dates back to 1941 when the Academy was founded by an act of the 90th Maine Legislature on March 21 of that year."
The history page states that the first class had 29 students, and the schooner, the Mattie, was the first training vessel. But by the end of World War II, it had produced over 300 officers that served during that war. More from the history page:
"The Academy now offers two undergraduate degrees and sixteen academic majors in four maritime-related fields: engineering; international business and logistics; marine sciences; and marine transportation. The Graduate Studies program offers a Master of Science in global logistics and maritime management."
The campus grounds are 35 acres in size. Campus maps are available on the web site. It is a NCAA Division III school, and is a memboer of the North Atlantic Conference.
