John Denny was born in Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1846. he entered the United States Army from Elmira, NY in 1967. He was Buffalo Soldier serving in the United States Army in Company B of the 9th Cavalry headquartered at Fort Hays, KS. On September 18, 1879, during the Indian Wars, his unit came under fire in Las Animas Canyon in the New Mexico territory. For his action of removing a fellow soldier to a place of safety while under heavy fire he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
A 4' high black granite monument sculpted to look like a book is inscribed:
