A sunrise boat ride along the ghats of Varanasi and their scenic beauty is a unique experience. It is also a great way to watch people coming down the river in early morning, taking bath in the Ganges, performing rituals and even washing clothes.

Also known as Benares, Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and is closely associated with the Ganges. Hindus believe that death in the city will bring salvation, making it a major centre for pilgrimage.

Varanasi has 87 ghats, most of which are used for bathing by pilgrims and spiritually significant Hindu puja ceremony, while a few are used exclusively as Hindu cremation sites.

Morning boat ride on the Ganges across the ghats is a popular tourist attraction. The spectacular 4 km stretch of ghats is a unique sight, best viewed at dawn, in that "soft first light" when the river and ghats have a timeless appeal. The architecture of the ancient temples and palaces are best appreciated from the perspective of a boat – both day or night. The ghats are best approached by Dashashwamedha ghat, where boats are available for hire.

Our boat ride started at the Dashashwamedha Ghat, aimed south up to Harish Chandra Ghat (cremation ghat) and then came back and ended at the Manikarnika Ghat (another cremation ghat).
