Greta is the home of the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly. Benalla is the nearest major town to Greta, and became the epicentre of the Kelly Gangs bush ranging exploits and ultimately the headquarters of the Police efforts to capture the gang, while the nearby town of Glenrowan was the site of the Kelly Gang siege in June 1880 which was ultimately ended with Kelly's capture.
