Located on the shore of Lake Benalla, is a fascinating and imaginative Benalla Ceramic Mural. The mural project started as a community arts project in 1983. Funding from the Australia Council Community Arts Board saw the appointment of Judy Lorraine as Artist-in-residence. Opportunities for all skill levels encouraged the community to participate in creating the ceramic forms. Local primary school children helped design the clay pavers which surround the circular entrance seat, and appointed Australian ceramic artists completed the "cave seats" in the colonnade.
This Gaudi-like structure brings an element of fantasy into our world of reality.
The structure includes a small performance amphitheatre, viewing platform and two sets of tuned sound pipes (Thongaphones) played with the Australian foot thong for performances.
From the upper terrace of the structure, the view encompasses the Art Gallery and Gardens across Lake Benalla. The circular origins of the plan are best observed from this area, with views into the Winter Courtyard and Amphitheatre. The domes are situated at an ideal location for a panoramic view. The Colonnade is a series of sculpted seats leading from the amphitheatre to the winter courtyard.
The Benalla Ceramic Mural was officially opened by the Mayor Cr Bill Hill November 2
