6. The Old Town House (1727) needed to be sturdy of raters to withstand the turbulent shouts of pre-Revolutionary town meetings. It is a pleasing example of the first phase of New England Georgian design -- a two-story clapboarded building set high upon a granite walled basement, its corners flanked with quoins, its low gabled roof enhanced by a simple cornice.

Market Square is formed by the intersection of Mugford, State and Washington Street. This also is the original spot for the original settlement of Marblehead, known as Old Marblehead. It is Georgian in design and the work of local craftsmen. The second floor was used by John Goodwin Post 82 of the Grand Army of the Republic as the permanent meeting hall in 1898. The room still has all the original furniture and artifacts preserved. Today it is home to Marblehead Historical Society.
