The first meeting house on this site, built in 1809, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in 1864. Construction of this church, designed by notable Maine Architect Francis H. Fassett, was commenced shortly after.

Graced with twelve stained glass windows down the sides of the sanctuary, the church also has a large rose window at the rear. In the balcony is a large pipe organ, beautifully decorated, which was installed when the church was built. It was made by the firm of E. & G.G. Hook in Boston.

All the windows, including the large rose window shown below, have been dedicated to past parishioners. This, a Tiffany Window, one of the tall windows down the sides of the nave, has been dedicated to Eliza Smith Bradbury, 1815 - 1879. Eliza was the wife of James Ware Bradbury, a US Senator from 1847 to 1853. The rose window was dedicated to James.

The inscription at the bottom of the window is below.
IN MEMORY OF
ELIZA SMITH BRADBURY
1815 - 1879

Mr. Bradbury married Miss Eliza Ann Smith, daughter of Thomas W. Smith, Esquire, a prosperous merchant of Augusta, November 25, 1834. Mrs. Bradbury was an excellent woman, affectionate, cheerful, full of life and energy, and possessed of great executive ability—a model wife, mother and member of society. She died suddenly January 29, 1879, greatly lamented by her family and friends. Four children were the fruit of this marriage, Henry Westbrook, James Ware, junior, Thomas Westbrook Smith and Charles.
