The first meeting house on this site, built in 1809, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in 1864. Construction of this church, designed by notable Maine Architect Francis H. Fassett, was commenced shortly after.
Graced with twelve stained glass windows down the sides of the sanctuary, the church also has a large rose window at the rear. In the balcony is a large pipe organ, beautifully decorated, which was installed when the church was built. It was made by the firm of E. & G.G. Hook in Boston.
All the windows, including the large rose window shown below, have been dedicated to past parishioners. This, one of the tall windows down the sides of the nave, has been dedicated to John Dorr, died April 19, 1882, aged 83 years, and his wife, Mary Ann Dorr, February 8, 1802 - November 24, 1875. John was elected an Honorary member of the Maine Press association on January 21, 1875 and was treasurer of the Jerusalem Chapter of the Freemasons of Augusta, ME. Apparently he also served as Justice of the Peace in Augusta.
All that is positively known of Mary Ann is that, as a girl she was the subject of a painting by E. E. Finch, entitled
Young Girl, which sold at auction in 1985 for $20,900. The painting would have been done around 1812 to 1815. A small photo of it can be seen
HERE.
The inscription at the bottom of the window is below.
