The weapon of Meppel, the local arm of the Drenthe town of Meppel. The description reads:

"In silver top three cubes of saber and down three clover leaves vert, on a shield zoom throat of ten pieces of silver shield covered with a golden crown with five leaves.."

The weapon symbolizes the peat extraction and farming in the municipality; in ancient times an important source of income. The first weapon of Meppel was granted in 1819 to the municipality with the following description:

"Of silver, top loaded with three underlying condensed among themselves joists called hameijden, and the bottom of the shield three clover leaves in their natural color, placed second and 1. The shield covered by a golden crown."

With the correction of the second weapon in 1955 changed de facto nothing except the self-description:

"In three silver lying peat in natural color, one above the other, and below three clover leaves vert, placed second and 1. The shield covered with a golden crown with five leaves."

The Hamei was replaced in the description by peat blocks, the number of florets on the crown was expressly mentioned that it was made ??clear that this is a marquis crown went. With the merger with Nijeveen the weapon was largely maintained, only the blocks were tilted, and the shield hem of Nijeveen added. The tally symbolize the peat excavation and peat trade, the clover leaves represent the pasture. The ten pieces are a reminder of a historic event in the Kolderveen. Kolderveen also belonged to Meppel, in 1422 to parish was elevated. This was done under the condition that the pastor tens mud rye as tax to pay.
