This 1936 gray granite TX historical marker commemorates that under an oak tree found 0.125 mile north of here, Sam Houston gathered his troops from as far away as east Texas. Although Houston was criticized for delaying to attack Santa Anna, these troops who gathered here near Gonzales, TX were the ones who ultimately defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto, TX. This was the beginning that lead to that ending.
