The fire department in the Harewood area was originally a separate, local fire department which operated out of this hall on Fourth Street. When a number of communities amalgamated into the City of Nanaimo in 1975, the various fire departments all became part of the city's fire department. This department - designated Station 5 - continued to operate out of the hall until the mid-2000s, when it was closed down and incorporated into Station 1. Today, the former fire hall is the Harewood Activity Centre - a multi-purpose community centre operated by the City of Nanaimo.
