City Palace, Jaipur, includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings. It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan.

The Rajendra Pol (gate) is flanked on either side by two marble elephants richly decorated, holding lotus flowers in their trunk and mounted by an old man. Each elephant has been carved out a single piece of marble.

These marble elephants were added by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II (1912–1970) to comemorate the birth of his first son Sawai Bhawani Singh (1931–2011). Sawai Bhawani Singh was the titular Maharaja of Jaipur from 24 June 1970 to 28 December 1971, when all titles, privileges, and privy purses associated with princely states in India were abolished by the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of India. He died at age 79 due to multi-organ failure.
