"The great thing about this is that you can fit nine times the amount of trash into one of these compactors than you can with a normal trashcan,"

"These are solar-powered trash compactors, and they were funded by a competitive grant from the Main Street Grant Program, a special funding source sponsored by New York's Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
"They're really fascinating, as far as trash goes," said Gary Ferguson, Downtown Ithaca Alliance executive director, of the new receptacles.
"They look like regular trash cans, except that they are actually a compactor that's solar powered, so that they don't need to be near a regular power source," he continued. "But you can use them like a regular trash can.Ferguson explained that manufacturers had found that 90 percent of volume in a trashcan is made up of air. Even when a trashcan is full, it's the air between the pieces of trash that accounts for most the space.
What the new receptacles do, he said, is to periodically compact the trash."
