The lighthouse has stood at the Point of Presqu'ile since 1838. It was in operation from 1840 until it was decommissioned in 1963. .The lighthouse was equipped with reflectors by 1874. A seventh-order optic was installed in 1896, which was upgraded to fourth-order in 1908. The light was electrified in 1935, and automated in 1952. The lantern room was removed in 1965 and currently displays a red 500-watt modern optic.

Today, the lighthouse serves as a visual reference point to the many visitors to Presqu'ile Provincial Park. The former lightkeepers house, built in 1843, is now part of the Visitor Centre. The former fog alarm building was demolished sometime after it was decommissioned in 1935.

In 2012 a Preservation Society was established to refurbish the lighthouse and possibly install a new lantern room.

The interior is closed to the public.
