"THOMPSON Richard Paul Thompson, M.D., a long time Jacksonville resident and renowned surgeon, died peacefully in his sleep Jan 12, 2009. He was 101 years old. Funeral Mass service to celebrate his full and colorful life will be Saturday at 10 am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 121 East Duval Street, Jacksonville. Dr. Thompson was born in Macon, GA, one of seven children, and spent most of his childhood in St. Augustine, FL. After college at St. Mary's in Kansas, he received his MD degree at Temple Univ. School of Medicine in Philadelphia where he also completed training as a General Surgeon. Soon afterward, he enlisted in the Medical Corp of the Army and was sent to Africa and Italy where he served several years as a battalion surgeon on the front line during WWII. When the war ended he was a Major in Florence Italy. During his military service, he was awarded a Congressional Legion of Merit and 5 separate Bronze Star Medals for his courageous actions. Soon after the war ended, he moved to Jacksonville, set up a surgical practice, and dedicated his life to helping and healing others. In 1958 he married Mary Ursula Jones with whom he lovingly raised 3 children. His family was always extremely important to him, as he also kept very close relationships with his brother and sisters who lived nearby. During his exemplary surgical career he spent over 10 years as the Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's hospital. Although he eventually retired from surgical practice, his life was far from over as he continued pursuing his passions including his family, the piano, fishing, cultivating orchids and other horticultural endeavors. He was devoted to his church and had a strong relationship with God. He and his wife Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past November. He is survived by his wife Mary, sister Marie, 3 children (Richard Thompson Jr., Bobby Thompson, Bridget Thompson Stamos, MD), and two grandchildren (Ilias Stamos and Jessee Ann Thompson). Richard also leaves behind numerous friends who loved him dearly. He touched and influenced the lives of many with his compassion, caring ways, sense of humor and humility."
