"In 1849, a huge fire devastated the village of Owego, destroying 107 buildings downtown. Thinking of what to do to revive their village, a group of Owego businessmen formed a stock company to create a tourist draw: a grand hotel with 145 rooms, that would serve traffic coming through Owego on the river and the Ithaca-Owego railroad. In 1851 the Ahwaga Hotel opened for business, and rapidly became a center for culture, commerce, and politicking in the Empire State...Teddy Roosevelt stayed there; NY Governor Alfred E. Smith stayed there; Helen Keller, on a speaking tour, stayed there. John D. Rockefeller, whose family moved to Owego when he was ten, stayed there many times as an adult. Clarence Chamberlain stayed there, as did George Bernard Shaw, Norman Vincent Peale and John Foster Dulles. "
