Jimmy Cagney was one of America’s most prolific and versatile actors. He began his career in the 1920’s as a Vaudeville performer and went on to become an Academy Award winning actor on the silver screen. Cagney was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning the Oscar in 1943 for his leading role in “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Early in his career he was cast as a tough guy gangster Tom Powers in “Public Enemy.” This tough guy image would stick with him for the rest of his career. However contrary to popular belief Jimmy Cagney never utter the words, “You dirty rat!” or “All Right, You Guys!” Cagney’s career spanned more than 60-years, until he retired to his Dutchess County (NY) farm in the mid-1960. Over the next 20-years he made only a few public appearances. In 1974 he accepted the American Film Institute’s Life Time Achievement Award. He came out of retirement in 1981 to appear in the film “Ragtime.” His last performance was in 1984 when he appeared the television movie “Joe Moran.” On March 30, 1986, James Cagney suffered a heart attack and died at his farm. He was 86-years old. During his funeral mass at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, President Ronald Reagan, who was a close friend delivered the eulogy. Jimmy Cagney is entombed at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
