Dolní Brežany (3900 inhabitants) is located in Central Bohemia in the county of Prague-West. The town is spread over an area of 1,066 hectares and also incorporates the villages of Lhota, Zálepy and Jarov. In recent years, Zálepy and Jarov have changed from primarily recreational areas with weekend cottages into places where people live year-round. Dolní Brežany borders Prague, but is also a natural center for other municipalities located above the Vltava River valley: Ohrobec, Tocná, Zlatníky, Hodkovice and Liben, and partially also Zvole, Brezová, Oleško, and Cholupice.
The future development of Dolní Brežany and the surrounding communities will be associated with science, research and innovation. Currently, an agricultural brownfield in the town’s center was converted into two leading scientific facilities. The first of these, called HiLASE, is focused on developing a new type of laser for industrial use, practical research, and medicine. The other facility, ELI, is an international research institute featuring the most intensive laser in the world.
