In a small town Dolní Brežany, located on the southern borders of Czech capital Prague, you can find the most advanced laser research centre worlwide and part of Research Infrastructure (RI) of pan-European interest - ELI Beamlines.

The main goal of ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) is to create the latest laser equipment in the world. There will be accomplished and implemented research projects covering the interaction of light with matter at intensity being 10 times higher than currently achievable values. ELI will provide ultra-short laser pulses of a few femtoseconds (10-15 fs) duration and give performance up to 10 PW. ELI brings new techniques for medical image-display and diagnostics, radiotherapy, tools for new materials developing and testing, latest in X-ray optics, etc.

ELI is also an attractive platform for educating a new generation of Ph.D. students, scientists and engineers. The Czech Republic is the host country for the top international research, which may attract further investment in advanced technologies with high added value.

ELI is operated according to a new model designed for a consortium of European research infrastructures (ERIC). Members of the ELI-ERIC will become the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania (founding members) as well as the major partners of the project preparatory phase (ELI-PP): Germany, Great Britain, France and other countries. Implementation of ELI in the Czech Republic is in charge of Institute of Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. It coordinates a national consortium ELI-CZ comprising 14 Czech universities and research institutes. Key support is provided by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Central Bohemia region.

Several world records have already been broken during the development of laser systems. The laser system 3, which is build together with the US Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, uses the brightest laser diodes that have been ever made in the world.

ELI Beamlines facility, designed by a British design company Bogle Architects, was ceremonially opened on October 19th, 2015. The ELI Beamlines' design by Bogle Architects has been conceived as a research campus within a landscaped setting and consists of four separate buildings, accommodating offices, laboratories, a multifunctional space with lecture theatre and a café and the principal element - a massive concrete ‘box’, comparable in size to a football pitch, housing the laser hall itself. A lightweight roof floats over the atrium or ‘heart’ of the building, with louvres providing shade during the summer whilst allowing sun to penetrate and heat the atrium during the winter.
