The following history of the church comes from
their website:
The Presbyterian Church in Sooke began in the early 1890s when a group of people met in each others homes to worship. These worship services were sometimes led by a minister who would travel the great distance from Victoria to Sooke in a canoe. In 1898, Knox Presbyterian Church officially opened, sitting on the same plot of land that our Church occupies today.
In the early 1950s there was much discussion about putting an addition onto the Church, but eventually it was decided to build a new one. The new Church was opened in 1955 and the old Church moved to Throup Road and it has served as an Eastern Star Lodge and Masonic Temple.
Several members of Sooke's pioneer families are buried in the graveyard. The most locally-famous of these is Edward Milne Jr., who founded Knox Presbyterian Church, established a large farm, became a shopkeeper and postmaster, and even ran a horse stage. The Milne's Landing area got its name because he built a wharf to offload supplies brought in from Victoria by water, and later the Edward Milne Community School would be named in his honour.
