The rail yard is used for offloading and onloading trains onto a ferry which makes the 2½ hour crossing of the St.Lawrence River to a mailine in Matane,Qc.Canada. This connects Baie-Comeau to the rest of the North American continent. Trains into this railyard come from three locations. A newsprint mill, an aluminum plant (both within a mile) and a general holding area (3 miles away) where lumber and general rail cargo can be trucked in and loaded onto the railcars. The ferry crosses once or twice daily depending on traffic. Both the train and the ferry are operated by CN. (Canadian National Railways)
