The home was built in 1859 on a parcel of 9 acres. In 1880 a second floor was added and Victorian double galleries were added on all sides of the house.

The house was completely remodeled in 1926 to the current Classic Revival style. The current semi-circular porticos were added during this remodeling.
In 1940 the house became the property of the city of Tyler. A major renovation of the house was begun in 2010 and was completed in 2011.
The house and grounds are maintained by the City of Tyler. The house is a museum that is open for the public 10am-4pm Tues-Sat. Closed Sunday and Monday. The park/garden is open 8am-5pm, seven days a week.
Admission is free, but a donation is suggested.
