"As Civil War veterans passed away, the Grand Army of the Republic, otherwise known as the G.A.R., bought plots for their burials. Today, in Broome County, large sections of Floral Park Cemetery and the Chenango Valley Cemetery are the final resting place for hundreds of Civil War soldiers. Each year, thousands of American flags are placed on those graves to denote the soldiers’ service to our country."
