The cornerstone for this Gothic styled church was laid November 3, 1867 and the church was dedicated August 3, 1872. The church named after the founder of the Redemptorists, Saint Alphonsus Liguori and became a parish in the St. Louis Archdiocese in 1881 under the care of the Redemptorists as it remains today. The parish was originally predominately an Irish parish, and now is predominately an African-American parish. The title of the "Rock" Church was the name the construction men called the church during its construction, the nickname has remained to the present time.
