In Bucksport, within Ft. Knox State Park, is an observatory from the western bridge tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which is claimed to be the tallest bridge observatory in the world.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge spans the Penobscot River and carries U.S. Route 1 over the river. To get to the observatory, at the western side of the river, turn north on Knox Road to the entrance about a half mile north.
There is a fee to get in - generally $5 for Maine residents and $7 for non-residents. Drive beyond the fort and follow the road to the observatory and park at the base.
The sign is in the elevator lobby and documents the building of the bridge. In the lower right corner is the following statement: "AT 420 FEET, the observatory is the tallest occupied structure in Maine and the highest public bridge observatory in the world. The panoramic view encompasses the picturesque town of Bucksport, Fort Knox and the head of Penobscot Bay.
The view at the top is great! The Penobscot River winds through the hilly landscape. In fact, it splits at Bucksport - the land on the eastern side of the bridge is actually an island within the river. To the south it widens to Penobscot Bay. The town of Bucksport is visible directly north and Fort Knox is nearer and to the left of the town.
Type of documentation of superlative status: Poster on wall of elevator lobby within western bridge tower
