Tioga County has marked many areas with these signs. Interestingly, they were for 2006, which was a record flood, but were not updated with the 2011 flood levels which were higher. The Susquehanna River is very prone to flooding. In particular, tropical storms that stall over the area, whether hurricane or not, can drop significant water into the river basin. This effects the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, New York and Pennsylvania.

“In 2005, we had the 100-year flood, and in 2006, we had the 500-year flood,” she said. “What-year flood is this?” This is a reference to the 2011 flood.
