History of Mark:
The granite monument is located west of Columbia on the south side of I-70. The tavern, an important site along the Boone's Lick Road, remained at this site until 2012 when it was dismantled and stored for future full restoration. The Boone's Lick Road was an important transportation route stretching from St. Charles, MO to Franklin, MO in the early 1800s. Beginning in 1816 the Boone's Lick Road was the main migration route for the flow of emigrant moving west of the Mississippi River. The original road followed a route about 6 miles north of Columbia. This monument is located on a later version of the road which became well-traveled after the establishment of Columbia, MO in 1821.
