The PIONEER MOTHER, a heroic bronze statue by A. Phimister Proctor stands in the court between Susan Campbell and Hendricks Halls, women's dormitories. The statue was presented in 1932 by Burt Brown Barker, vice president of the university, in memory of his mother.

This statue still resides here within the Women's Memorial Quad Ensemble. There are three bronze plaques monumented on three sides of the base of the statue. Two of the plaques are relief panels depicting pioneers emigrating to the West. The third plaque contains an inscription written by Burt Brown Barker in memory of his mother.
