The Swan Hotel in Sadler Street is at least C16th but may well be earlier. It is Grade II listed and has been substantially restructured and refronted in the late C18th or early C19th, the rear wing was rebuilt in 1885. It is now a Best Western Inn.
The original carriage entrance was at the centre of the old three-bay inn, this is now the main pedestrian entrance and a two-bay wing extension has been constructed with the full-width carriage entry under it. It is above this entrance that the wooden painted swan sits on an ornamental cast-iron bracket. Meant to be a Mute swan the head and beak are much more like a farmyard goose.
