In Bucksport, within the Fort Knox State Park, is Fort Knox, which has reported paranormal happenings and investigated by several paranormal societies.

The fort is located within the park. Entrance is off Maine Route 174, and by the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. there is a station at the entrance where you pay the admission fee (the fee depends on whether you are a Maine state resident or not).

There are signs to the fort, but it is near the parking lot.

Fort Knox is a large fortification with stone and earthen works. There are paths that lead you to and around the fort. Most of the fort is accessible. There are also some nice views of the Penobscot River from the fort. The fort was built from 1844-1869. The fort was never had the proper number of cannons or fully staffed with troops, except in the Spanish American War. It never saw any action at any time.

There have been reports over the year by people who thought they were tripped or pushed, feelings of areas that are 'evil,' and that a figure of a soldier appears.

Several paranormal organizations have done investigations here, including The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), better known as the Ghosthunters on the SyFy Channel. The show featured this site on Season 7, Episode 7. In general, the investigators had various experiences, including heavy breathing sounds, possible entities breaking a laser beam, and high K2 readings (a device that detects electro-magnetic fields) without the presence of electrical power.

Another source, Maineguide.com, has other accounts of ghosts and other experiences. One account had an unexplained bright image in the upper right corner of the picture. Another observed a 'family' of ghosts, including a little girl with a bonnet. There were other sightings of shadow-like figures.

When we were there, we did not see, hear or feel any unusual activity. It was bright daylight, and there were people around, so it was not ideal. We did pass through dark tunnels to the batteries, however.

Come and see for yourself.
