About 2m high this 'you-are-here' consists of three parts, at the bottom the symbol of the Bishop's Palace, then a short piece of history telling about the Home of the Bishops, topped by an etched map of the Palace showing the important sites within it.
Entry to the Palace grounds is free and one way into the complex is via the Bishop's Eye, one of the three gateways into the walled precinct, the Liberty of St Andrew, which encloses the twelfth century Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, Vicar's Close and the residences of the clergy who serve the cathedral. it is a wonderful place to walk and soak up the atmosphere of what is in effect a giant garden surrounded by a moat.
The History piece tells us:-
This Palace, founded in 1206, has been the bishops' residence for
more than 800 years. The great medieval bishops - Jocelyn, Burnell,
Ralph of Shrewsbury and Beckynton - developed their Palace next
to the city's ancient wells. For centuies, water flowing from these
wells has shaped the landscape, the buildinga and the gardens of
this remarkable and graceful site.
