Ferdinand I of Bourbon, son of Charles III of Spain, assigned in 1819 to Antonio Canova a statue of himself (in 1817 Ferdinand asked to Canova a statue of his father). The natural size model of the horse was ready in 1820 and the colossal model (for a payment of 14,000 scudos) in 1821. In 1822 the bronze was casted. After Canova's death in the same year, a public announcement was published in order to assign the making of the king's statue. The sculptor Antonio Calì was selected: his work was based on the Canova's model of Charles III. Both the statues were placed in front of the church of St. Francis of Paola.
