The rail line originally connected Low Moor with Dewsbury and opened in 1848.

The line closed to passenger traffic in 1965 but continued to carry goods traffic until this finally ceased in 1981.

In 2000 a stretch of the line between Dewsbury and Oakenshw was converted to a cycling and walking route called the Spen Valley Greenway. The bridge is now used to carry cyclists, pedestrians and horseriders along the route. link.

The public footpath under the bridge connects Quaker Lane and Bridon Way. This footpath now forms part of a marked trail devised by the Spen Valley Civic Society. The trail is knows as the Luddite Trail, named after dissenters in the Industrial Revolution that were worried about losing their jobs due to automation of weaving equipment. It was officially opened on 18th September 2015. link
