Old Chickahominy House consists of a small restaurant on one side of the building and a gift shop on the other. It was founded in 1955, in a different location near the Chickahominy River, by a lady known as Miss Melinda, who was a true steel magnolia. The current building was completed in 1962. The story is that, upon being told that the bank would not grant her a loan because the location was too far out in the country, Miss Melinda planted her chair directly in front of the bank official’s desk and announced that she was not moving at all until she had the loan.
She walked out his door with the loan; and the business has been a beloved local fixture ever since. The town, by the way, has expanded out to and beyond the location, so that it is no longer "out in the country." The food is good simple country cooking that makes visitors of a certain age and, perhaps, regional affiliation, feel nostalgic. It has been my own favorite local eatery since I moved to Williamsburg in 1975.
Guests with certain dietary preferences may like to know that turkey sausage can be ordered at breakfast, while vegetarian and gluten-free items are available at lunch. The restaurant is not open to the public during the dinner period, but can be reserved for evening banquets and plantation suppers. The gift shop half of the building has for decades been the domain of a succession of feline mascots, all called Miss Melinda, and all carefully trained to stay out of the restaurant and kitchen. Guests who have a cat allergy or phobia are welcome to ask that Miss Melinda be confined to her own little room. But generally she can be found curled up on a cushion, or draped very much at her ease over some display surface among the merchandise.
