"The cities of Pontotoc and Ecru have been awarded the National Weather Service's StormReady status.

"Communities designated with that status are provided the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property, according to the program's Web site. The award was made during a special ceremony last week.

“Today, Pontotoc and Ecru join a growing list of 1,000 communities and counties nationwide who are designated StormReady communities,” said Jim Belles of the National Weather Service in Memphis. “I commend them for their commitment to the safety of the people who live here.”

"Belles said per square mile, Mississippi is the most dangerous place to live when tornadoes strike. The state comes in behind only Texas in number of deaths related to tornadoes, “and you can fit a lot of Mississippis inside the state of Texas.”

"Pontotoc Mayor Bill Rutledge said it was the tornado in February 2001 that woke up the city.

“We didn't start out to be a StormReady city, but we wanted to do all we could to provide shelters for the people who live here,” he said.

"In addition to eight shelters, there are five warning sirens in Pontotoc." ~ REGINA BUTLER - 2015, Journal, Inc.
