The lower Fraser Valley is an agricultural economic generator. For Abbotsford, where this high level mark is located, in 2005 this industry generated $557,994,754 in gross farm receipts. While much of the land is protected from urban development, both the Matsqui and Sumas prairies have been subjected to flooding over the years.

Protected by an extensive dyking network these low lying areas have seen flooding. The highest in recorded history remains the 1894 flood, which had significant damage to the communities lining the river. The 1948 also saw significant damage, while the 1972 saw much less damage do to the protective network of dykes and pumps.
