QE2060 - CORVALLIS CLOSED CUPOLA - Corvallis, OR - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

I recovered this U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey benchmark from 1903 in good condition. It is a closed cupola located atop Benton Hall. Although Benton Hall has undergone numerous renovations over the decades, this cupola has remained the same since its erection in 1888. The NGS datasheet and posted coordinates are adequate for station recovery.

DESCRIBED BY OREGON GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 THIS INTERSECTED AND UNCHECKED POSITION IS THE WOODEN CUPOLA OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, OREGON STATE COLLEGE, WHICH STANDS TOWARD THE EAST IN THE GROUP OF BUILDINGS ON THE COLLEGE CAMPUS. IT IS SURMOUNTED BY A SHORT SPIRE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY OREGON GEODETIC SURVEY 1938 THE U.S. ENGINEERS, PORTLAND DISTRICT, HAVE EXTENDED A LINE OF TRAVERSE FROM THE VICINITY OF PORTLAND TO THE VICINITY OF EUGENE. THIS TRAVERSE STARTS AT SYLVANIA AND IS TIED TO STATION YAM, AND CLOSES ON SOUTH BASE. IT DOES NOT LEND ITSELF READILY TO AN ADJUSTMENT WITH THE PUBLISHED POSITION OF CORVALLIS, CLOSED CUPOLA. IF THAT TIE IS LEFT OUT THE TRAVERSE MAKES A FIRST CLASS CLOSURE.
