OLDEST - Shoe Store in America - Belfast, ME - Superlatives on Waymarking.com

In Belfast's downtown section is Colburn's Shoe Store, which has a sign claiming that it is the oldest shoe store in America.

The store is on Main Street, northeast of the intersection of Main Street and High Street, and is on the northwestern side of the street. The building is a multi-story brick building with the opening of the store at street level. Above the first floor is the sign with the following text:

"Colburn Shoe Store."

Above the second floor is a sign with the following text:

"Oldest Shoe Store in America - Est. 1832."

I could not find anything more about the store. I did find a reference to another claim to be the oldest shoe store in America - Stout's in Indiana. The history page states that this store was established in 1875. Without knowing the history of Colburn's and any 'qualifying' statements, that store was established later.
