This stretch of the Dixie Highway is also part of the Old Spanish Trail Auto Route. From the Drive the OST website: "Entering South Jacksonville on current US 1 (the Phillips Highway), the older motels and roadside architecture pick up again. ...the bright yellow and green Gator Lodge features a grinning gator about ready to snap at a Western Union sign."

We estimate this old motel was constructed in the late 1950s or early 1960s as the Gator Lodge existed some time before the City of Jacksonville's consolidation, which occurred in 1968.
