Lance Corporal Arthur Thomas Fleetwood was born on September 6, 1878 to William and Sarah Fleetwood of Almeley's Wootton, Herefordshire, England. Fleetwood originally served in the 2nd Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
By 1907 Fleetwood's sister Edith settled with her husband, James Francis, in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada and began farming. A few years later several other members of Edith's family, including Thomas, immigrated to Surrey to join them.
On August 18, 1915 Thomas Fleetwood enlisted in the 47th Canadian Infantry Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and was shipped overseas to France.
Two days after his 39th birthday he died of wounds he received in battle and was buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.
The memorial is located outside the Fleetwood Community Centre and Fleetwood Branch of the Surrey Public Library. It was donated by the Fleetwood Community Association in 2008 and was sculpted by Nathan Scott.
