Originally a Girls School it is now co-educational. A school has existed in Wollongong since 1826. Over time student numbers steadily increased and by 1880 total enrolments had reached 218. It was decided that the existing site and building were no longer suitable and a new site in Smith Street was resumed early in 1881. A new building was erected here during 1883 and 1884. Designed by N.E. Kemp the departmental architect, it became a source of local pride. Its bell tower was particularly notable.
