Historie Lesu mesta Brna se datuje od 13. století, kdy tehdejší královské mesto Brno dostávalo majetek darem, zástavou nebo odmenou. Koupí zacalo získávat lesy až v 15. století od pánu v okolí mesta. V první polovine 16. století koupilo mesto jeden z nejduležitejších majetku – tvrz a ves Kurim, kde zrídilo správní stredisko statku mesta Brna a odtud pozdeji brnenská radnice spravovala jako vrchnost všechna svá venkovská panství. Šest století snažení mestských radních vedlo k tomu, že v roce 1938 dosáhly brnenské mestské lesy rozlohy 7 514 ha.

Neblahý rok našich dejin 1948 težce zasáhl i hospodarení mestských lesu. Po velkém politickém nátlaku byla brnenská radnice v roce 1954 donucena nejvyššími státními orgány predat veškerý lesní majetek státu. V jednáních se však podarilo prosadit, že mestu zustanou ve správe lesy, které mají charakter lesoparku a leží v nejbližším okolí mesta.

Zvrat nastal až po roce 1989. Vydáním zákona CNR c. 172/1991 Sb. o prechodu nekterých vecí z majetku Ceské republiky do vlastnictví obcí se mesto Brno stalo znovu vlastníkem svého puvodního lesního majetku. Pro zajištení odborné správy v mestských lesích byla v roce 1992 zrízena príspevková organizace Lesy mesta Brna. Spolecnost Lesy mesta Brna, spol. s r. o. vzniká v roce 1994 z puvodní príspevkové organizace. Zakladatelem a jediným vlastníkem je mesto Brno. Dne 28.cervna 2006 schválilo Zastupitelstvo mesta Brna zmenu právní formy na akciovou spolecnost. Statutárním orgánem je predstavenstvo. Predmetem cinnosti je odborná správa a rozvoj majetku statutárního mesta Brna, podnikání s ním, plnení verejných služeb s obecne prospešným posláním.

Dnešní majetek statutárního mesta Brna, jehož odbornou správu Lesy mesta Brna, a.s. provádejí, predstavuje více než 8.200 ha plochy, která zahrnuje 8.186 ha pozemku urcených k plnení funkcí lesa, zbývající cást je orná puda a ostatní plochy. Od zacátku novodobého hospodarení (tedy od r. 1993) došlo k nárustu pozemku spravovaných LmB o 900 ha. Plošné zastoupení dle kategoriií lesa:
