The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The stone bridge is also known as Lomeshaye Bridge and is a Historic England Grade II listed building with the following description. "Public road bridge, 1795. Robert Whitworth, engineer. Dressed stone. Single elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs. Band and coped parapet ending in piers."

At some point one side of the bridge was widened and has a cast iron arch. The other side of the bridge has pipes that runs across the bridge parapet.
