The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is also known as Lob Lane Bridge as the road it carries over the canal used to be called Lob Lane (now Clitheroe Road).

The stone bridge has a single elliptical arch and at some point the bridge has been widened on both sides and new concrete decks have been attached to the original bridge.

The original arches of the bridge can still be seen.
