Records of burials in this cemetery begin on April 1st 1859. The city was established as a river port to enable the shipment of wool, wheat and other farming produce.
The grave I have chosen to photograph is of my wife's great great grandmother, Jessie Hannah McCallum (nee Hughan). Jessie was born in England in 1835. Her father died soon after and her brother, Robert, was convicted of theft and transported as a convict to Australia. Jessie arrived in Australia on the ship Cullodon in 1850 and the following year married a much older squatter, Alexander McCallum. She made two return trips to England. On the second she gave birth to her youngest child on the high seas and then returned without her husband to the property known then and now as Yungera Station. In late October of 1865 she was called to tend to a neighbour who lived several miles away who was giving birth. She swam her horse across a flooded river and stayed in her damp clothes for several days before returning home. She contracted pneumonia soon after and died at the age of 30 leaving three young children.
The grave can be found at S35 21.339 E143 33.283
