Brand new in 1877, this lighthouse replaced a previous wooden structure that was built in 1804 and was located on the exact same spot. It consists of a cast iron shell lined with bricks, a design developed by the Army Corps of Engineers, Lighthouse Board. This design was favored by the Board because it was durable as well as economical and could be assembled with pre-fabricated parts. Lighthouses of this basic design can be found up and down the Atlantic seaboard and on the Great Lakes.

In spite of the pure utilitarian nature of a lighthouse, there often seems to be a certain sentiment that the structure should be aesthetically pleasing as well. Contemporary criticism of this particular tower included terms like “hideous” and “corpulent length of stovepipe.” (Not helping matters was the fact that it was originally painted brown.) Personally, I find the design of this lighthouse far more pleasing than the pictures I’ve seen of the previous wooden structure (which had been lowered from 80 ft. to 55 ft.). Talk about corpulent, it was so wide that the new tower was assembled inside of it!

Anyway, the lighthouse is only open for visitation on certain days during the summer months. The schedule is posted by the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses on their website.

The stamp is one of a set issued in 2013 showing five different New England Lighthouses.
